Ancient Bronze Mirrors

Ancient Mirrors Polished to Give a Reflection

These polished bronze mirrors were used to reflect the face. They were made of molten bronze or copper.

They were round, oval, square and most of the time they had a handle. If any rust developed it was easily polished new. Later in ancient Rome mirrors were made of tin, silver and even gold.

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
- 2 Corinthians 3:18

"And he made the laver of brass, and the foot of it of brass, of the lookingglasses of the women assembling, which assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation."
- Exodus 38:8

"Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?"
- Job 37:18

2 Corinthians 3:18 - But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, [even] as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Revelation 4:6 - And before the throne [there was] a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

1 Corinthians 13:12 - For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Heart Message

Mirror, Mirror

For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection of reality as in a riddle or enigma, but then when perfection comes we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God]. 1 Cor. 13:12

One of our deepest desires is clarity. Sometimes, we want to see the entire road before we set out on a journey, knowing in advance the pitfalls, the difficulties, and sorrows we may face, so that we can prepare for them, or choose an easier path. It is said, however, that God gives the child his ticket, when he's about to board the train.

To navigate the territory of God's Kingdom and move forward, we must develop faith, and the ability to act without complete understanding. We need a tolerance for ambiguity, trusting that God is in control. He will give us that clarity as we follow the light we have. Sometimes, we must be content with seeing in a dark mirror, until God's clarity manifests.

If we were lost in the woods, and trying to find our way out, the slightest distant sound of civilization would be our marker, and we would run toward it. If our ship were lost in the fog at sea, the slightest flicker of a lighthouse would direct our ship toward safety. Developing desire for the slightest sights and sounds of God's Kingdom, without demanding real time understanding enables Him to begin us towards new direction and change in our lives. Of course, we are afraid and cling to comfort. The old ways seem best.

But lets begin to walk in faith rather than by sight, and accept those challenges in the Spirit, walking toward God's light, one step at a time. Let's say "Yes" to new invitations to Church or Bible Study, or for new service in one ministry or another. Maybe we can risk praying for the sick, or to have a conversation with someone different when prompted inside. We can increase our responsiveness to God's voice of direction. The new adventures we've been praying for sometimes begin in awkward vagueness, progressing towards a seasoned veteran's confidence.

If you haven't started your journey with Jesus because all questions aren't answered yet, take the next step. Don't allow the stumbling blocks of past hurts or issues rob you from God's wonderful treasures. Step towards God, and clarity will begin to come. Paul tells us that on this side of eternity, there will always be an element of knowing only "in part". But one candle of God's light is enough for us to begin to move.

We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then; see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! 1 Cor. 13:12
