Ammathus

G5 on the Map

Hamman Tabariyeh. A Hellenistic city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee formerly called Hammath. Hammath was a fortified city, originally given to the tribe of Naphtali when the land of Canaan was divided among the tribes. This was also probably at one time a city of Levites (Josh 21:32). During Roman times the Jewish sources give it the name "Hamtha" which means "hot baths," and the Greeks called it Ammatous. It was actually famous for its hot springs, and many believed them to have healing powers.
