Region. Gk. name of the region corresponding to Bashan NE of the Jordan River. It was given to Herod the Great when he ascended the throne, and after his death it became part of the Tetrarchy of Philip, with Ituraea and Trachonitis. In A.D. 37 it formed part of Herod Agrippa I's kingdom, and then it belonged to Agrippa II until his death. It then was annexed to the Roman province of Syria.

Most of the region is a fertile plain, with an abundance of water. It borders on Mount Hermon to the N and Gilead to the S. The land was renowned for its rich pasture, which was filled with large herds of cattle and sheep. ( Deut 32:14)

Jer 50:19 But I will bring back Israel to his home, And he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan; His soul shall be satisfied on Mount Ephraim and Gilead.

Deut 3:8-11 And at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount Hermon (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and all Bashan, as far as Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
