Athlit. Greek name ('cattlemen's town') of a former Phoenician settlement. This was also the last stronghold of Jewish independence (A.D. 130) and for the crusades as well (13th Cent.) and there are still remains of a castle and a church. The Syrian coast was very rugged and dangerous, the double-facing seaport was unsheltered.
