Chinnereth

G5 on the Map

(Ginnesar). Tell. el-Urelmeh. Chinnereth was the OT name. It means in Heb. "garden of riches." Gennesaret was located on the NW shore of the Sea of Galilee. The earliest use of the name can be found in 1 Macc. 11:67, Ginnesar. The Targums identify the name with Chinnereth (Deut 3:17; Josh 19:35), which is applied both to the lake and the city. Jesus visited here on the way to Capernaum:

Matt 14:34-36 "When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well."

Mark 6:53
