Gergesa

H5 on the Map

Kursi. A city on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was called "the country of the Gergesenes" and here the Bible says, Jesus cast out demons (Matt 8:28). It was known as Kursi in Jewish sources, and Gergasai in other sources (Origen and Eusebius, Onom 73:14) where it is mentioned as the location where the herd of swine had drowned.

A large monastery and church have been excavated there, which would indicate that this was the place that was believed to be the scene of the miracles.

The territory is mentioned in Mark 5:1, Matt. 8:28, Luke 8. 26, 37.
