Mount Ebal

Jebel Eslamiyeh. Mount Ebal was a mountain of Samaria, opposite Mount Gerizim, rising to 3,084 feet above sea level. Together they formed a pair of summits in the center of Israelite territory.
It was on the summit of Mount Ebal that Joshua built an altar of unhewn stones by the command of Moses (Josh 8:30-32). When the tribes of Israel had assembled to hear the blessings and curses relating to the observances of the Law, they gathered half on Mount Ebal and the other half on Mount Gerizim. The curses were read on Mount Ebal (Deut. 11:29; 27:11-13; Josh 8:33-34).
