The Negev: A-16 on the Map
The Negev region. (in KJV translated 'south', but the word is the name of a definite region; cf. Josh. 15. 21. Israeli Negev.) Desert to the South of Palestine, particularly South of the Beersheba Valley of Salt depression, though it might include areas North of Beersheba: area of wanderings of the Patriarchs, Gen. 12.9; 13. lff.; 20. 1; 24. 62; inhabited by Amalekites, Num. 13. 29; Canaanites, Num. 21. 1; settled by Calebites, Josh. 15.19; included territory of Simeon (Josh. 19. 1-8); cf. 1 Sam. 27. 10; 30. 11, 14; 2 Sam. 24. 7; Isa. 21. 10; 30. 6 &c.
Joshua 15:21 -
And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the coast of Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,
Genesis 12:9 -
And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
Genesis 13:1 - And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.
Genesis 20:1 - And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
Genesis 24:62 -
And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.
Numbers 13:29 - The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
Numbers 21:1 - And [when] king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took [some] of them prisoners
Joshua 15:19 -
Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.
Joshua 19:1 - And the second lot came forth to Simeon, [even] for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah.
Joshua 19:2 - And they had in their inheritance Beersheba, or Sheba, and Moladah,
Joshua 19:3 - And Hazarshual, and Balah, and Azem,
Joshua 19:4 - And Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah,
Joshua 19:5 - And Ziklag, and Bethmarcaboth, and Hazarsusah,
Joshua 19:6 - And Bethlebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages:
Joshua 19:7 - Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages:
Joshua 19:8 - And all the villages that [were] round about these cities to Baalathbeer,
Ramath of the south. This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.
1 Samuel 27:10 - And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said,
Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.
1 Samuel 30:11 -
And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;
1 Samuel 30:14 - We made an invasion [upon] the south of the Cherethites, and upon [the coast]
which [belongeth] to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.
2 Samuel 24:7 - And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites,
and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, [even] to Beersheba.
Isaiah 21:10 -
O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
Isaiah 30:6 - The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish,
from whence [come] the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young
asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people [that] shall not profit [them].
