John 1:44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
During the time of Jesus Bethsaida a village on the Sea of Galilee at the far northeast side. It was a fishing village where the fisherman hunted along the dark weed infested caverns below the shores. Bethsaida was the home of Peter, Andrew, and Philip who were called by Jesus to follow him and become his disciples. Later Jesus rebuked the people of Bethsaida for not receiving him and believing his words.
A town in Galilee, on the west side of the sea of Tiberias, in the "land of Gennesaret." It was the native place of Peter, Andrew, and Philip, and was frequently resorted to by Jesus (Mark 6:45; John 1:44; 12:21). It is supposed to have been at the modern 'Ain Tabighah, a bay to the north of Gennesaret. - Easton's Bible Dictionary
Historical Notes
- BETHSA'IDA (beth-sa'i-da; Gk. from Aram. bet sayda, "house or place of fishing").
- Bethsaida was not far from where the Jordan River in the north flows into the Sea of Galilee.
- It would be a common sight to behold the shadow of death and mountainous
cliffs and caves from Bethsaida.
