Magi

MA'GI (ma'ji, Gk. magoi singular, magos from Old Persian magav). The KJV renders "wise men" in Mt 2:1,7,16.

The term "Magi" comes from the ancient Persian "magav" and was used as the name for priests and wise men among the Babylonians, Medes, and Persians.

To say there were three because of the number of gifts that were given is merely speculation with no historical basis just as it would be to assume that they were kings.
