Not far from Bethlehem's fertile grasslands were cave shelters called manger's. The soft limestone in the area eroded over centuries and formed most of Bethlehem's caves. These manger's provided shelter for domestic animals and livestock. The herdsmen could easily carve out niches in the walls and and use them as feeding troughs.
