Fair Havens
M-8 on the Map
Ancient Fair Havens Modern name is Kali Limenes. A port in southern Crete with a city called Lasea. The Bible mentions the "Fair Havens" in Acts 27:8.
Acts 27:8 - And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city [of] Lasea.
Lasea Lasaea
(Lasaea). A town in the south of Crete, not far from the Promontorium Samonium
mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (xxviii. 8). - Harpers Dictionary of
Classical Antiquities. New York. Harper and Brothers.
Kali Limenes (Greek: Καλοί Λιμένες) is a village and port in the Prefecture
of Heraklion, southern Crete, in Greece, located 82 kilometres (51 mi)
south-west of the city of Heraklion. It has an estimated 100 inhabitants. It is
known as a major bunkering spot for ships in the southern Mediterranean.
History
Kali Limenes (meaning "Good Harbors", "Fair Havens") is a natural port near the
southernmost point of Crete. Local legend, as well as biblical scholars, assert
that Apostle Paul, in whose name a small church was built there (first in
Byzantine times, then restored in the 1960s), landed at Kali Limenes to preach
the Christian faith in Crete. The event is, however, disputed by some scholars,
as it was probably during that time that St. Paul was held prisoner by the
Romans.
Kali Limenes is close to the village of Lentas (ancient Levin), and the
unexcavated remains of Lassea, a port for the ancient settlement of Gortys.

LASAEA (lasaea), a city in Crete, near the roadstead of the Fair Havens. (Acts, 27.8.) This place is not mentioned by any other writer, but is probably the same as the Lisia of the Peutinger Tables, 16 M. P. to the E. of Gortyna. (Comp. Hck, Kreta, vol. i. pp. 412, 439.) Some MSS. have Lasea; others, Alassa. The Vulgate reads Thalassa, which Beza contended was the true name. - Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography, William Smith, LLD, Ed.
