Quotes About the Bible and History

John Wilkinson

Holy Places in Jerusalem

"The average visitor to Jerusalem today is shown so many 'holy places' connected with Jesus that he cannot help at some stage asking himself whether they are all genuine. It can be disturbing to find (for instance) two places pointed out, both of which are said to have been Jesus' tomb.

...As a rule of thumb we should regard a holy place first pointed out after A.D. 400 as more likely to be an imaginary addition to the topography of Jerusalem than a correct identification."

John Wilkinson, "The Jerusalem Jesus Knew" (London: Thames and Hudson Ltd., 1978) p. 10-11
