Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; - Free Bible Online

Genesis 2:21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh at that place.

      21. deep sleep--probably an ecstasy or trance like that of the prophets, when they had visions and revelations of the Lord, for the whole scene was probably visible to the mental eye of Adam, and hence his rapturous exclamation.
took one of his ribs--"She was not made out of his head to surpass him, nor from his feet to be trampled on, but from his side to be equal to him, and near his heart to be dear to him."

Brief Summary: God established the Sabbath day. The LORD creates man and woman, and places them in the Garden of Eden. They are commanded to eat freely but not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Detailed Summary: God (Elohim) ended His work and rested on the seventh day. He established the seventh day by blessing it and sanctifying it. Then in verse 4 the focus shifts to the LORD (Jehovah), the personal name of God and He is seen as creator and He forms man from the dust and gives him the breath of life. The LORD also planted the Garden of Eden with the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and He commanded Adam not to eat from this tree or else he would die. The LORD then created woman from Adam's side and Adam called her woman. They were both naked and not ashamed.
