In this hunt relief, depicted in three registers, Ashurbanipal (668-c. 627 BCE) is seen at top thrusting a dagger into the belly of a lion (an image also seen in the Assyrian royal seal). The central register shows the king on horseback spearing a lion while another attacks a horse from the rear. At bottom, attendants with horses aid in the hunt.

In the above detail of a royal lion hunt, king Ashurbanipal is seen plunging his sword into an attacking lion, which has already been shot in the head by one of the king's marksmen. The theme of the lion hunt was very popular in Neo-Assyrian royal art.
