The Tomb of Alexander Jannaeus was located Near the Pool of the Sheepmarket. Alexander Jannaeus (aka Jonathan the High Priest) was king of Judaea from 103-76 BC. He was the son of John Hyrcanus and grandson of Simon the Hasmonean (led Judaea to independence). In 103 BC Alexander Jannaeus' brother Aristobulus I died and he began his reign and he expanded the kingdom, he died on the opposite side of the Jordan River and was buried in this tomb in Jerusalem. After his death a civil war broke out. Josephus speaks of a monument of Alexander (Jannaeus) on the east of the city (5 Wars vii. 3)
