Ziggurat at Ur
Illustration of the
Ziggurat at Ur of the Chaldees
This reconstruction of the Ziggurat or (Temple-Tower) at Ur, similar to the Tower of Babel, was the most conspicuous building in the city during the time of Abraham, the first Hebrew. It was finally rebuilt by Nabonidus in the sixth century BC, over the ruins of the Temple that existed in Abraham's time, which was also rebuilt over another Temple from even more ancient times.
In the ancient world Ziggurats were huge "stepped" structures with a temple at the top. This Temple would have been to the city god. The city ziggurat would easily be the most conspicuous building in the city, towering above any visitors coming to their city. Therefore the ziggurat was not just a religious center but also a center of civic pride for the whole city. Any visitor would instantly see the ziggurat. The ziggurats were built on an immense scale: in the time of Abraham they would sometimes reach the height of 150 feet. Around the base there might be more temples or dwellings for the priests.
Genesis 11:31 - And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
