Map of Old Testament Israel - Achzib
Achzib
B-14 on the Map
Achzib (Chezib): Tel el-Beida. A city in Judah located in the lowlands
West of the Dead Sea, Achzib was mentioned in the Bible in Joshua 15:44; and Micah 1:14.
Joshua 15:44 -
And Keilah, and Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages:
Micah 1:14 -
Therefore shalt thou give presents to Moreshethgath: the houses of Achzib [shall be] a lie to the kings of Israel.
ACHZIB
ak'-zib ('akhzibh, "lying" or "disappointing"): The name of two towns in Israel:
(1) A town in western Judah in the lowlands, mentioned in connection with
Mareshah and Keilah as one of the cities allotted to Judah (Josh 15:44), and in
Mic (1:14), where it suggests play upon its meaning, "deceptive" or "failing,"
possibly the place having received its name from a winter spring or brook, which
failed in summer. It is also called Chezib (kezibh (Gen 38:5)), where Judah was
at the time of the birth of his son Shelah. In 1 Ch 4:22 it is called Cozeba,
the King James Version "Chozeba" (kozebha'), clearly seen to be the same as
Achzib, from the places with which it is grouped. (2) It has been identified
with the modern `Ayin-Kezbeh in the valley of Elah, and north of Adullam. (3)
Mod Zib Septuagint variously: Josh 19:29, Codex Vaticanus, Echozob, Codex
Alexandrinus, Achzeiph; Jdg 1:31, Codex Vaticanus, Aschazei, Codex Alexandrinus,
Aschendei, Greek Ecdippa: A small town some miles north of Acre on the coast. It
is mentioned in Josh 19:29 as falling within the possessions of the tribe of
Asher, but they never occupied it, as they did not the neighboring Acre (Acco).
The Phoenician inhabitants of the coast were too strongly entrenched to be
driven out by a people who had no fleet. The cities on the coast doubtless aided
one another, and Sidon had become rich and powerful before this and could succor
such a small town in case of attack. Achzib was a coast town, nine miles north
of Acco, now known as Ez-Zib. It appears in the Assyrian inscriptions as Aksibi
and Sennacherib enumerates it among the Phoenician towns that he took at the
same times as Acco (702 BC). It was never important and is now an insignificant
village among the sand dunes of the coast. It was the bordertown of Galilee on
the West, what lay beyond being unholy ground.

More Information about Achzib
Achziv is an archaeological site on the northern coast of Israel, 15 kilometers north of Acre. It was first settled in the Middle Canaanite (Bronze) II period by the Phoenicians. [1] In the Bible, it is described as falling within territory assigned to the tribe of Asher. An Arab village, Az-Zeeb, was established on the site during the Mamluk period. Today Achziv is a national park. History. Restored building at Achziv National ParkIn the Bible, Achziv was a town in the Shephelah, or plain country of Judah (Josh. 15:44); probably the same as Chezibh mentioned in Genesis 38:5. Originally a Phoenician city (Ecdippa in Greek), it was assigned to the tribe of Asher (Josh. 19:29; Judg. 1:31) "And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher ... and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzibh." Achziv (Cheziv) is mentioned in Jewish rabbinic writings, for example Midrash Vayikra Rabba 37:4. King David added the city into his Kingdom, but King Solomon returned it to Hiram as part of the famous pact. During Sancheriv invasions, the Assyrians conquered the city. During the reign of the Seleucids, the border was established at Rosh HaNikra, just north to Achziv, making it a border city and under the control of Acre. A maritime city named Cziv, nine miles north of Acre, is mentioned by Josephus Flavius, and later by Eusebius. During the Crusader period, the site was known as Casle Umberti. Remnants of ancient Achziv, now known as Tel Achziv, are located on a sandstone mound between two creeks, Kziv creek on the north and Shaal creek on the south, close to the border with Lebanon. The Arab village of Az-Zeeb was established during the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, the houses erected using the stones of the Crusader castle. The villagers fled to Lebanon during the 1948 ArabIsraeli War. In 1946, The Jewish Resistance Movement attempted to blow up the railroad bridge over the creek at Achziv in an operation known as Night of the Bridges. A monument to the 14 soldiers killed there was erected on the site. - Wikipedia
