The Second Temptation - PUT GOD TO THE TEST

"Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone." Matthew 4:5-6

The second temptation was for Jesus to jump off the Pinnacle of the Temple in Jerusalem, which was a very high portion of the Temple overlooking the Kidron Valley perhaps a 700 foot drop. He was to voluntarily expose Himself to a situation that would certainly destroy Him, unless God delivered Him. Satan even quotes Scripture to make it more enticing, but it was actually not quoted correctly. The temptation was to jump from the Pinnacle and watch God's angels catch him. Jesus came to save the world, and of course God is going to protect Him. Jesus knew the promises of God and resisted the devil's temptation again by quoting the Word of God.

"Jesus said unto him, It is written again, 'Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.'" - Matthew 4:7

Again the famous words, "It is Written" is exactly how Jesus overcame the second temptation of the devil.

Jesus Led by the Holy Spirit

According to the Bible Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. The Spirit of God chose to make the very first mission of the Messiah a contest between the king of this world and the real King. The devil could only use the things of this world, the things that all men are enslaved by, the enticing pleasures of sin, to offer Jesus. He was no match for Jesus because sin had no power over Him.
