The Scribes were Judges on Matters of the Law

The Scribes also had authority to pass sentence in a court of justice. If a man was experienced in the interpretation of the law he could be called to the office of judge. The New Testament reveals that Scribes were among the members of the great Sanhedrin.

After the After the fall of the Jewish state in 70 A.D., the Scribes were recognized as independent judges, whether they gave judgment collectively or as individuals. Being learned in the law and the commentary of Scripture, the scribes were specially qualified for delivering lectures and exhortations in the synagogues. They also had the responsibility of caring for the text of Scriptures.
