The Jordan River During the Time of Abraham

Genesis 12:5, 6 - "Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother's son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land."

Abraham and the Jordan River. When Abraham made his journey to the promised land, the land of Canaan, he would have certainly came across the Jordan River which rapidly descends from Mount Hermon to the Dead Sea. It must've been very special for him, knowing that God had a plan for everything in this land to be a blessing in some way to his descendents throughout all generations.

The Jordan River. The world has many great rivers, but few are as famous as the Jordan River. In comparison the Jordan River is small and insignificant to some of the great rivers of the world, yet this river has been continually famous to millions of people throughout the world for thousands of years.

Geography. The Jordan River begins at the base of Mount Hermon in the very northernmost part of Israel at the junction of four rivers or streams, and flows down southward into the deepest land trench in the world and empties itself into the Dead Sea. As it begins its descent in the Upper Jordan it flows down through a small lake called Lake Huleh and then descends nearly 700 feet in nine short miles as it runs into the Sea of Galilee. From the Sea of Galilee it descends very rapidly another 650 feet downward through the Lower Jordan for approximately 200 miles, until it reaches the Dead Sea which is 1300 feet below the level of the Mediterranean Sea. The Jordan River averages around 100 feet in width, but in the springtime it can become much wider.

Genesis 12:9-10 - "And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land."
